What is heartburn?

Heartburn happens when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus that carries food to your stomach. In a normal condition, when you are eating, the lower esophageal sphincter (band of muscle around the bottom of your esophagus) becomes loose to make sure that food and liquid are flowing down easily into your stomach.

Heartburn may happen anytime during the day but worsen after eating. Based on many testimonials, heartburn worsens when reclining or lying in bed, which makes it hard to sleep deeply. Heartburn symptoms include acidic or bitter acidic taste in the mouth, sensation of burning pain in the chest that happens at night or after eating specific food, and/or pain that gets worse when bending over or lying down.

Am I facing Heartburn or Heart attack?

Some patient thought they were facing heart attack when they felt the chest pain caused by heartburn. Heartburn has no relation to heart attack, it may be hard to know the difference while it is going, since the discomfort is in your chest. Heart attack symptoms are different and more severe.

The uncomfortable burning feeling caused by heartburn may be felt moving up from your stomach to your neck and throat. However, heart attack symptoms are:

  • Pain in your arms
  • Pain in your neck and jaw
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Extreme fatigue and anxiety

If your chest pain is accompanied by these symptoms, and heartburn medication doesn’t help, call your Healthcare provider for medical attention right away. If you live in Dubai, call Dr. Ali Al Dameh immediately.

Heartburn Causes:

Heartburn can be a symptom of several diseases, such as acid reflux, GERD, Hiatal hernia … etc. However certain lifestyle may cause heartburn. Some food and drinks can trigger heartburn in some people, such as alcohol, spicy foods, any caffeinated drinks, fruits, fatty or fried foods, and large or fatty meals

Sometimes heartburn can occur due to a Hiatal Hernia defect. A hiatal hernia is when the stomach bulges up into the chest through an opening in your diaphragm, the muscle that separates the two areas. After recognizing that the patient is suffering from Hiatal Hernia, surgical intervention may be required based on your healthcare provider suggestions. Since medication is a solution for the symptoms and not the disease.
